Various studies and reports show some contrasting data: on the one hand a strong interest of young people in the topic of money and personal finance management, and on the other hand little knowledge on the topic, especially among those coming from a disadvantaged socio-cultural background where their families are not able to support them in acquiring even simple financial skills.
Moreover, while there are various tools for the financial education of young people at both national and European level, the perception of young people is that these tools are not accessible and clear. Furthermore, the vast majority of today’s financial education is very technical, using complex terminology, and missing to address core life skills. Like understanding the crucial role of emotions and emotional regulation in money decisions, and how one can be more intentional in its money earning, spending, saving, investing and giving behaviors. Or the extent to which social media literacy and one’s ability to use it effectively translate into better money management skills.
In this context, this year we joined forces with Saffex (Italy) and Universal Interaction Foundation (The Netherlands) to implement the Emotional Finance project co-funded by the EU’s Erasmus+ programme. The project aims at improving financial literacy among Gen Z youth (13-25 years old) through increased awareness and application of emotional intelligence concepts. Both by youth themselves, and especially by teachers, trainers, educators and other finance professionals.
In this sense, the main activities and results of the Emotional Finance project revolved around developing an Educational Toolkit consisting of:
- 7 training modules
- 12 video training pills for awareness raising and self-learning through social media,
- examples of international good practices in financial education,
- guidelines on the use of the Toolkit.
Following piloting of the Toolkit in autumn 2024 with youth and educators in all partner countries, on 3rd December 2024 you are invited to attend its public launch part of a hybrid international peer-exchange event. The scope of the event is to further introduce the Toolkit, as well as experiences and feedback from its piloting, to a wider target audience of educators, youth workers and other financial advisors. As financial education is very much a cross-curricular, and often an extra-curricular activity, educators focused on various topics are targeted for introduction to this Toolkit. Not just educators of accounts and economics, but also those engaged in home economics, civics, Personal, Social and Career Development (PSCD), or in student / youth support services in general.
Access to the Toolkit and event participation are free, but due to seating limitations, kindly confirm your attendance as soon as possible before 29 November 2024 by registering at https://rb.gy/j7o7im. If you cannot join in person, you can also participate in the event online. The connection details will be sent to registered participants in the days before the event.
